...As well as attending a large number of shows and historic races across the country, you will often find me with a microphone in my hand, interpreting at prestigious occasions like the Festival Automobile International or providing commentary for some of the events in France popular with English-speaking visitors or with a British theme.

...This British-themed day is one of several events throughout the year on the banked track at Montlhéry devoted to cars from a particular country: click here for more details of the events for fans of American, French, German, Italian and Japanese cars.

...Before France takes its usual summer break, there is one more event where I’ll be providing commentary (as usual in English and French): the Grand Prix Historique de Bressuire, with Matra cars and pre-war motorbikes the guests of honour this year.

...Finally, don’t forget that on this website you’ll also find an event calendar, showing exact dates for this year’s shows, together with a set of downloadable files containing all the addresses of the venues in the guide, ready for you to download to your satnav as ‘Points of Interest’ or view on Google Maps.

...Also held in even years are the 48 Heures Européennes in Troyes (this year from 1-9 September) and, of course, the Paris Motor Show, which starts on 4 October 2018 and celebrates its 120th anniversary, no less!

...Many of France’s regional cities are now starting up their own classic car shows: after Dijon and Nantes, there are shows taking place for the first time in Strasbourg and Mulhouse, the latter taking over from the former Festival automobile held there: why not combine one of these shows with a visit to the car museums at Mulhouse or Sochaux?

...Closer to the Channel ports, the Club de l’Auto – which already organises top-flight rallies and concours d’élégance in Deauville and Granville – has added a new event to its calendar this year, taking participants in pre-1970 cars from Enghien-les-Bains outside Paris to the coast at Le Touquet from 28-30 September.

Modern classics from the 1980s and 1990s – known here as ‘Youngtimers’ – are increasingly popular and will have a new show all to themselves this year: from 29 June to 1 July, the first Youngtimers International show will be held at the Circuits du Val de Loire in central France.

Since the original edition of the guide appeared, enthusiasts have been able to enjoy a wonderful new celebration of historic motorsport at Montlhéry, Les Grandes Heures Automobiles, and it will be back for the third time in September.

...A great time to visit this will be at the start of July this year, when the circuit will be home to the first-ever Grand Prix de France Historique, which promises to bring 200 racing cars onto the track, including no fewer than 50 historic Formula 1 cars.

...This year’s edition of Rétromobile gave visitors the chance to see some cars normally hidden from view, like the Louis Pasteur coupé, or the Louis Krieger electric landaulet, both on loan from the Musée national de la voiture in Compiègne, which is still awaiting major restoration work.

...During the last weekend in April, it will be the tenth birthday of Classic Days: this hugely successful event includes demonstrations on the track at Magny-Cours, a massive parade lap to raise money for charity and a flypast by historic planes.

Top five car museums to visit in Germany

Located right next to its main manufacturing plant in Untertürkheim, Mercedes’ museum is a magnificent building, which more than seven million visitors have enjoyed since it opened in 2006.

...BMW’s museum is part of a huge integrated complex, the BMW Welt (or BMW World), with exhibition areas not just for BMW cars, but for its motorbikes, Rolls-Royce and MINI too.

...At the heart of this complex, the Museum Mobile showcases not just the history of Audi as we know the brand now, but of the other makes which came together to form Auto Union during the 1930s, DKW, Horch and Wanderer, as well as NSU.

...More than just a car museum or even an automotive visitor centre, Autostadt is really a leisure park all on its own, attracting more than two million visitors every year.

...The last weekend in May should be a memorable one for all Mercedes fans (the author included), when the French magazine Etoiles passion hosts the second Mercedes Festival in the magnificent surroundings of the Ecole Militaire, France’s military academy, in central Paris, on 28 May.

...Within each regional chapter, there are thematic sections covering Museums (nearly forty in all), Shows & Tours (for classic car shows, concours d’élégance and so on), Market Place (listing galleries of motoring art, autojumbles etc.), Motorsport (for sporting events and regularity rallies) and finally Circuits, with information on how to drive on them or hire them for club days and so forth.

...I already had quite a few ideas from following the French motoring press, and then I went through the archives of magazines such as ‘La Vie de l’Auto’ and ‘Rétroviseur’ over the past three years in the French National Library, as well as their English equivalents, to be sure I had identified all the major events. After that, I shared a provisional list of places with a couple of friends who are French motoring journalists, and they gave me some more ideas, like the Bouchon de Tourves, which I didn’t know.

...You can search by region and make use of the maps on the phone, so that you can look for a museum, for example, and then create a route to navigate right to it.

Now there's MORE at DriveGuide.guru !

In keeping with our aim to make Drive Guide Guru a website that's of real use to Guide owners and travellers to France alike, we've added a new page to the site – Links.
